Towards a Christian Engagement with British Islam
The unit explores the nature of Islam in Britain, considers issues faced by Muslim communities and examines Christian engagement with Islam and Muslim communities. It is an opportunity to explore Islam in Britain as it really is and from a Christian perspective. We will navigate the diversity present in the UK and how to conduct demographic research on any particular local area.
Topics include the different perspectives on the place of women in Islam, various forms of radicalism, with attention given to Muslim, Christian and secular commentators. Students will explore the various approaches Christians have taken to dialogue, apologetics and mission. We will also be looking at the growing phenomenon of former Muslims in British churches.
The course will run over three months on Monday afternoons both in person at the Nazarene Theologicial College in Manchester and online.
